Varicose Veins

Overview –  Varicose veins are swollen, twisted, and enlarged veins that you can see under the skin. They are often red or blue in colour. They usually appear in the legs, but can occur in other parts of the body. It is more common among women than men.

Causes/Risk Factors

Varicose veins are caused when the valves in our veins do not function properly. Risk factors include:

  •  Older age
  •  Using birth control pills
  •  Being born with defective valves
  •  Obesity
  •  Pregnancy
  •  History of blood clots in your legs
  •  Standing or sitting for long periods of time
  •  Family history of varicose veinsSymptomsSymptoms of varicose veins include:
  •  Fullness or heaviness in the legs
  •  Visible, swollen veins
  •  Mild swelling of the feet or ankles
  •  Itching
  •  Leg swelling
  •  Leg or calf pain after sitting or standing for long periods
  •  Skin colour changes
  •  Dry, irritated, scaly skin
  •  Skin ulcers that do not heal easily
  •  Thickening and hardening of the skin in the affected area


Your doctor will examine the affected area. Blood tests may be helpful.


Treatment options of varicose veins may include:

  •  Wear compression stockings
  •  Lifestyle adjustments like weight loss and avoiding the risk factors
  •  Sclerotherapy
  •  Ablation
  •  Surgical procedures

    1. Hello Bisi, the moduretic shoul take care of the swelling, however you can try propping your legs on pillows or a stool at a level higher than the rest of your body. You should also have a renal function test done to if you haven’t.
