I love to travel, absolutely love it. I love the adventure, the sights, the food, the people and culture, the stress, all of it, I love. Now its fantastic to travel but how do you ensure you stay healthy? This is very important because you don’t want to cramp your fun by falling ill during a trip. So here are a few tips to ensure you stay healthy while travelling.
1. STRENGTHEN YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM
This is very important. Truth is, even if you are very cautious, you could still have a slip and eat some bad food or come into contact with harmful germs, and this is why it’s important your body is strengthened to fight off infections.
Invest in a medical check up, immune boosters, vaccines and multivitamins. This will help your body function optimally.
Ensure you use malaria prophylaxis, or treat yourself properly if you have malaria before travelling, especially to non-endemic zones. This prevents you from falling ill during your trip and ruining your holiday.
2. TRAVEL ESSENTIALS
Always travel with the following;
Shawl or jacket,
Pain relievers, some mild antibiotics and antimalarial. Never go on a long trip without having them.
Sunscreen, insect repellant.
Travel insurance – unexpected illness or accident during travel could be a major financial drawback, invest in a travel insurance to ensure you are not caught unaware.
3. TIPS FOR AIR TRAVEL
During Flights, take a short walk every hour to avoid Deep Vein Thrombosis or Blood clot formulation. Periodically fold and unfold your knees
Drink lots of water during the flight, to help with bloatedness and indigestion avoid carbonated or fizzy drinks and alcohol.
4. TIPS FOR ROAD TRAVEL
When travelling by road, make sure you empty your bladder before leaving home to minimise public toilet visits. Eat lightly before the trip. Avoid patronizing food vendors on your way. Pack some snacks or finger foods for the trip.
5. REST WELL, SLEEP WELL
It’s nice to be on vacation and want to catch up on maximum fun and keep late nights but it’s not too advisable to distort your normal routines. Also rest and sleep well, this is vital for a healthy body.
6. WHEN IN DOUBT, DRINK BOTTLED WATER
Don’t act like a tough ninja and think you can drink any tap water, always have a supply of bottled water. It’s not a hundred percent guarantee but it’s still your safer option.
7. AVOID SUGARS, ALCOHOL
Avoid sugars and alcohol on long trips because they dehydrate you and leave you weak. Airplane food is not advisable at all, they are loaded with sodium and preservatives which is not good for you, again have a stash of healthy snacks in your carryon.
8. EAT LIGHTLY
I know it’s exciting to want to try out different cuisines but it’s important to eat in moderation and to go for healthier options on menus, buffets and roadside choices. Moderation is key. And it’s also good to pack some healthy snacks with you to stave off the hunger pang especially in places where you can’t have a meal.
9. BE CAREFUL OF PUBLIC RESTROOMS AND CROWDED PLACES
Public restrooms are cesspools of germs, be very careful with touching doors and toilet lids. Wash your hands thoroughly after each visit. Also avoid crowded places, you don’t want someone sneezing coughing or touching you with any germ, yes you want to go for tours like any tourist would but opt out of crowded tours or go at times when it’s not rush hour.
10. ADVENTURE & TOURS
Its nice to go on adventure trips to have fun, make new friends and capture some thrilling moments. However, be careful in order to prevent accidents which may lead to disease or disability.
I hope these tips are helpful. Have a great one. Peace and love.
