Baby Brown Eyes
When you walked to the bus Stop that day, the only thing on your mind was the test you had to write that morning. You had stayed up all night preparing, and you just wanted to get it over with and catch up on the sleep you had lost. As you walked down the street, you heard something – It sounded like a cat at first, then as you approached the end of the road, you heard it again, this time it was unmistakable, “it can’t be” you thought. Stopping in your tracks, you looked in the direction it was coming from. The first reaction was to continue on, the bus stop was staring at you and time wasn’t really on your side, but then curiosity got the better part of you and you inched closer to the grass, heart beating so loud you were sure the thing could hear. Strangely the sound had stopped. As you parted the grass with both hands, your worst fears were confirmed. Two beautiful brown eyes stared back at you in a big brown carton. Your heart twisted with all kinds of emotions: fear, pity, love, sadness, anger, all at once. You looked at […]
Mobile Phone and your Health
Who is not attached to their mobile phone? It is the ultimate lifestyle device used for communication, information, entertainment, networking, banking, record keeping, business, relationships, etc. I cannot exhaust all the uses of the mobile phone or a Smartphone and the importance of this device has made us Phone addicts. I write articles from my phone. I do not use a Computer often. The applications exist on my device to write and edit, so I am a Phone addict myself. In conducting the research for this article, the most disturbing thing I discovered was the effects of having base stations or cell phone towers in residential areas. On some level, I believe the average person is aware of some of the dangers of cellphone radiation but not so much about cell phone towers. In India, it was concluded that people living within 50 to 300 meter radius of cellphone towers are at higher risk of diseases due to electromagnetic radiation. A resident of New […]
5 Benefits of Breastfeeding
Balancing work or career with breastfeeding can be a tough feat. Apart form having to contribute to the family financially due to the tough economic situations, moms also work for personal fulfillment and career development. With most employers, working moms have a 3 months maternity leave before they return to work, meaning new moms have to leave their babies at home or in a creche – making exclusive breast feeding difficult to achieve as mother and baby are seperated for prolonged periods during the day. However, the advantages of breastfeeding cannot be underestimated. The WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding for infants for the first 6months of life and continous breastfeeding with complementary feeds for up to 2years in order to achieve optimal growth. Though it may be hard to keep up, here are 5 reasons to motivate you to continue to breastfeed your baby; It protects your baby Breastfeeding has been found to offer protection against illnesses such as respiratory tract infections and diarrhoea. Breastmilk contains essential antibodies and proteins which help to fight infections. It contains just the right amount of nutrients at the right taste and temperature, and provides the nutrients baby needs to grow optimally. Saves Cost & […]
Whitlow is a painful infection of the nail bed, it is often found on the fingers near the nails. It is called ‘weaklo’ in lay terms. It occurs when the skin or cuticle at the nail bed is broken and it comes directly in contact with infected body fluids. When the infection is caused by a virus it is known as Herpetic Whitlow. It could also be caused by fungal or bacterial infection where it is known as “Paronychia.” Generally, it is common with people who immerse their hands in water often such as domestic staff, health workers (who need to touch the skin of other people), children (through finger sucking) and housewives. Whitlow is contagious, it can be passed from one person to another through the use of common hand towels, flannels and general utensils. Initial symptoms include pain, burning or tingling sensation in the affected finger, with associated fever or malaise, followed by swelling, redness and discharge of fluid.
